Ashbourne News, 13th July 1917 Ernest Simmonds was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Simmonds, of Alrewas Mill Cottages, Clifton. He enlisted in the autumn of 1914, and he had been formerly employed at Alrewas Mill, and was a member of the Hanging Bridge Football Club. He and several other soldiers were killed when holding a post which was heavily shelled. At the time of this report, his brother, Sergeant Herbert Simmonds, was in hospital at Warwick, and his other brother, Lance Corporal Dick Simmonds, was serving in France.
